It’s fitting: on a day in which Dan Haren leads the National League in ERA, the Cardinals have traded Anthony Reyes. The haul is a minor league righty reliever, old for his levels, who will have to get in line behind Mark Worrell, Jason Motte, and, if La Russa gets his way, Kelvin Jimenez, but it’s really irrelevant: the story here is that the Cardinals have, for two years, suppressed Reyes’s value as far as they possibly could, and this is the long-awaited end result. Underwhelming, to say the least, and a disappointing move from a guy who’s supposed to understand that minor league relievers aren’t hard to find.

  1. And so it ends. My question will always be who will take any of the blame? Anthony certainly didn’t pitch well for the Cardinals, but do they still think it was a good idea to try to change him into a ground ball pitcher at the MAJOR LEAGUE LEVEL? Does anyone in the Cardinals organization even THINK they did something wrong? Did they not think that leaving him in the minor leagues while promoting pitchers ahead of him THAT STUNK UP THE JOINT was going to hurt his value?

Reyes didn’t pitch well-that’s on him. Everything LaRussa and Duncan did that didn’t help pitch well-that’s on them. They really could write a book on how to completely and utterly destroy one young man’s progress. They had a big hand in it. The GM should be so much smarter than this.

  2. No doubt Reyes could’ve been dealt right after ’06 when there was value, or, knowing not every pitcher will fit the overhaul process that seems to come with Duncan-ized pitchers, a deal could’ve been made sometime much earlier than now.

When the Cards’ front office says they’re doing right by Reyes by trading him out, that’s biz-b.s., but at least this will give Reyes a shot at getting it back together. A new organization is often the catalyst for such comebacks. Good luck to A.R.

  3. Ha-ha. Doing right by trading him……what a crock. They did it so LaRussa and Duncan wouldn’t have to keep answering questions on why he’s still in Memphis. The front office and ML field management has never shown any care or concern for Reyes. They’ve wanted him gone for quite some time. They got their wish. Oh, joy.
