YES. Yadier! Supp! Everybody else! Your 2006 National League Champions, the Last Gasp of MV3, the Best of the Worst, the Masters of the Mediocre, Pasters of the Padres, Maddeners of the Mets, Terrifiers of the Tigers! Long may they reign!

I’m not going to pretend to analyze anything here. Yadier Molina just pulled a pitch into the seats. He grinned like Charlie Brown after sex. He rounded the bases, and then Adam Wainwright showed everything he learned from Izzy, from the maddening walks to buckling down and showing a cartoon curveball when it matters most. What should’ve happened didn’t.

The 2006 St. Louis Cardinals are going to the World Series. I’ve never been happier to be so wrong.

  1. I love the Cardinals and DESPERATELY want them to win the World Series, even though I think they had a better chance for such the past two seasons.

With week left to I thought they were down and felt optimistic about winning the pennant. Houston had a chance to make it much more difficult for the Cardinals, but the disAstros lost a crucial game the last day of the season so that what should’ve happened didn’t.

I didn’t figure they had a chance against the Padres, but after going up 2-0, I thought … you know, without El Duque and without Pedro, the Mets might be beatable. But their no name guys pitched well and the Carlos duo were hard to contain.

But our scrap heap pitcher (Weaver) and previous #4 starter (behind Carpenter, Morris, and Williams) found themselve dealing the nasty cards in the postseason, even while Carp was less than his usual Carpness.

They’ve won the NL Central, the NL Pennant, and that’s pretty good for a team with the least number of wins going into the playoffs.

Regardless of what happens next, there are twenty-eight teams out there who would be willing to trade places with the Cardinals.

    A successful season … yes.
A season of overachieving … yes.
A spectacular season … yes, but only if they win four more!

  2. I’m still predicting Detroit winning the Series.

The reason is simple–I gave up on the team even winning the division by mid-August. Ever since, I thought they were going to falter… lose the division, lose the NLDS, lose the NLCS….

They’re winning it all just to spite me. I can’t get optimistic now; I’ll only jinx them.

    :-)

  3. Did anyone else notice the great image that kept showing up in the bottom of the 9th? The Budweiser sign in the upper left of the screen had their cool “red crown” logo on the left, and Budweiser to the right.

Well, every time they showed the camera angle from behind and to the right of the pitcher, this crown was positioned directly above Wainright’s head. I don’t know if he is ready to be crowned king after last night or not, but I do have to say that it seemed a bit foreshadowing.

As a graphic designer, and someone in marketing, I have to tap AB on the back if they planned this. My guess is that it is a happy accident, and maybe I’m the only guy that noticed.

Either way, Prince Adam looked more like He-Man in that final at bat vs Beltran.
